The Sisters of the Assumption building will be acquired and soon transformed into a student residence for the Cégep de Trois-Rivières. The ten million dollar project, which consists of offering more affordable housing to students in Trois-Rivières, will be 80% funded by the government of Quebec.

The Ministry of Higher Education is providing a budget of five million dollars for the project. The rest of the funding, namely three million dollars, comes from the Société d'habitation du Québec.

The student residence will allow around a hundred students to find accommodation. Four rooms will be reserved for customers with reduced mobility.

The general director of Cégep de Trois-Rivières, Éric Milette, hopes that 75 housing units will be ready by the next school year, this fall. The rest should be ready by winter 2025.

The price range for housing will vary between $250 and $450 per month.

Affordable housing for students is a real rare commodity in Trois-Rivières. Last fall, 60 student rooms were available in the Cégep's six residences, while 350 rental requests were received.

I don't want the lack of student accommodation to be an obstacle to higher education. [A project like that] really meets the criteria for accessibility to higher education. We want to attract young people, but we also want to keep them with the UQTR which is very close, mentions the Minister of Higher Education, Pascale Déry.

The minister responsible for the region, Jean Boulet, believes that the project will attract many students. These are additional people who will come to us to discover our environment, who will either continue their academic career at university or who will decide to work in strategic sectors for the region.

This session, the Cégep de Trois-Rivières has 439 international students. Of these, 92 are newly arrived. Among them, Banel Fall, an 18-year-old Senegalese woman, settled last December.

Banel Fall, an 18-year-old Senegalese woman, moved in last December in Trois-Rivières.

For her, finding accommodation was not easy. The natural sciences student would have preferred to obtain a place in residence. However, the establishment was full.

Before arriving, I had found accommodation, but about 3 days before my departure [the owner] said he was going to renovate. So when I arrived here, it was my cousin who found me a roommate, but it was just a room. And afterwards, I was able to find the room where I am currently.

A quote from Banel Fall, Senegalese and student at Cégep de Trois-Rivières

Like many other students, Banel Fall will register again, when it is possible to do so, on the list of requests to obtain a place in residence.
