NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg: Russia is going to use fictitious «vote results» to escalate the war in Ukraine

NATO will increase its aid to Kyiv in response to Russia's “bogus” referendums in the occupied Ukrainian territories, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said on Friday.

According to Kyiv and its allies, the vote to join four Ukrainian regions to Russia is a pretext for annexing territories and escalating the seven-month war.

“Our response, NATO’s response is to increase support for [Ukraine],” Stoltenberg said in an interview with CNN.

“The best way to end this war is to further strengthen the Ukrainians on the battlefield so that they can at some stage … come to a solution that is acceptable to Ukraine and that preserves Ukraine as a sovereign, independent European state,” he added.< /p>

The organization of the referendums has raised fears that the Kremlin will try to include part of four Ukrainian regions into the Russian Federation, and then present Ukraine's struggle for the return of its sovereign territories as an alleged attack on Russia itself.

« This is what we need to be prepared for, that Russia will use these fake “votes” to further escalate the war in Ukraine,” Stoltenberg said, answering a question about this scenario. – But these votes have no legitimacy and, of course, do not change anything. This is still Russian military aggression against Ukraine.”

NATO allies support Ukraine with weapons, ammunition, other military equipment and training.

Four-day “referendums” were organized by the occupiers in a hurry after after Ukrainian troops recaptured large swathes of the country's northeast in a counteroffensive earlier this month.
