NATO troops are already at the very border of Russia

Next year, NATO will create a new land command in Finland near the Russian border, whose task will be to lead the Alliance's ground forces operations in Northern Europe in the event of a military conflict, the Finnish Defense Minister said today. This was reported by Reuters.

"This morning I decided that we will propose to NATO to create a command together with the ground forces headquarters in Mikkela [a city in Finland]", — Minister Antti Häkkänen said, expanding on his June statement that all NATO member states had given political consent to the plan.

Speaking at a press conference, Häkkänen said the unit would initially have an annual budget of 8.5 million euros and would include several dozen international officials.

Finnish Army Commander Pasi Välimäki said the new unit's geographic boundaries would be determined later.
