NASA and the US Department of Energy have signed contracts with companies and will work on a nuclear power program on the Moon.
Westinghouse Companies, Lockheed Martin and IX will each receive approximately $5 million in funding to design a nuclear power system.
NASA expects a 40 kilowatt nuclear separation system to operate on the Moon for at least 10 years. Testing of the system is planned by the end of this decade.
If the project is successful, it will be used as a battery during long-term missions to the Moon and Mars under the Artemis program.
