Time.news – Most of the cases reported in Italy were identified in the last 14 days in unvaccinated subjects, i.e. they have not received any dose of SARS-CoV-2 vaccine or have been vaccinated with the first dose or single dose vaccine within 14 days of diagnosis, i.e. before the time needed to develop a complete immune response to the vaccine .
This is what emerges from the extended weekly report published today by the Istituto Superiore di Sanità on its portal. Specifically, in the over 80 age group, in the last 14 days 35% of SARS-COV-2 diagnoses, 59% of hospitalizations, 78% of ICU admissions and 70% of deaths occurred in people who have not received any vaccine doses and who are currently 8% of the population in this age group.
With respect to deaths, it emerges that “the percentage of cases among vaccinated people is much lower than the percentage of cases among the NON-vaccinated population. If vaccines did not have an effect on the risk of infection, one would expect that the percentage of cases among those who are NOT vaccinated. who received a vaccination cycle was similar to that among those who did not have the vaccine. Instead – the report reads – the observed differences suggest that the vaccines are effective in reducing the risk of infection, hospitalization, entry into intensive care and death “.
Comparing the relationship between the vaccinated population and observed cases and the unvaccinated one and the observed cases, underlines the ISS, it is estimated that full vaccination (according to the prescribed doses) is approximately 80% effective in protecting against infection and up to 100% against the more severe effects of the disease, for all age groups.
As for the infection, the complete course of vaccinations has an effectiveness between 79.8% and 81.5%, depending on the age group. For ordinary hospitalizations, the effectiveness varies from 91.0% to 97.4% with the highest value in the 40-59 year range. For ICU admissions, the efficacy is 100% in the two younger groups (ie there was no ICU admission in the vaccinated in the period considered), and slightly drops to 96.9% in the over 80s. regards deaths, the effectiveness is again 100% in the two younger groups, while it drops to 98.7% in that 60-79 (2 deaths among vaccinated versus 78 of unvaccinated) and 97.2% in over 80 (15 deaths in vaccinated and 62 in unvaccinated.
Another effect of the vaccination campaign is the decrease in the median age of Covid-19 cases, given that the priority categories for the vaccine were the most advanced age groups. The median age of cases at first admission decreased in the last week (52 years), as did the age of cases at ICU admission (63 years).
