The Government of Moldova is faced with a new challenge from the pro-Russian regional leaders of one of the regions of the country, Gagauzia. Gagauz leaders opposed the judicial reforms proposed by Chisinau and demanded an increase in the status of the Russian language in the country. reports Reuters.

Let us recall that the population of the region is approximately 140,000 people. The Gagauz speak a language belonging to the Turkic group. Most of them profess Orthodoxy.

Last Friday, April 19, the People's Assembly of Gagauzia rejected judicial reform that would have led to the closure of the appeal court in the region, and demanded special status for the Russian language.

According to the Constitution of Moldova, the head of Gagauzia (bashkan) is automatically included in the government of the country.

However, President Maia Sandu did not sign the corresponding decree, since Eugenia Gutul, who currently holds this post, was elected on the list of a banned pro-Russian party led by businessman Ilan Shor, convicted of large-scale fraud.

Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Recean spoke out in support of judicial reforms. He stressed that the judicial authorities of Moldova will eradicate what he described as criminal elements ruling the region.

"The judicial system will do everything necessary and bring all members of these groups to justice. – he said Friday night in a television interview. – We have absolutely no grounds for confrontation.”.

Maia Sandu called Russia the biggest threat to Moldova and scheduled a referendum on the country’s accession to the EU, as well as presidential elections, at the end of the year. p>
