Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin asked law enforcement officials on Sunday to put in place “an important defensive device” in order to prohibit farmers “from any entry into Paris”.

The main agricultural unions, who consider the government's announcements in favor of the sector insufficient, had earlier announced that they wanted to carry out a siege of the capital for an indefinite period, starting on Monday afternoon.

To prevent these actions, the Minister of the Interior brought together on Sunday the directors general of the police and the gendarmerie, as well as the Paris police prefect.

The minister renewed his request for moderation on the part of the police against farmers.

Posture remains the same: the police must act with great moderation, and only intervene as a last resort, if the integrity of people is threatened or in the event of serious damage to buildings , explained the ministry.

Farmers denounce in particular the drop in income, low pensions, administrative complexity, inflation of standards and foreign competition.

The president of the main agricultural union, the FNSEA, Arnaud Rousseau, on Sunday called on his troops for calm and determination.

No question there is #x27;other accidents, he said, referring to what happened earlier this week in Pamiers, in the southwest, where a farmer and her daughter were killed by a car attempting to to cross a dam.

But he also warned that the sequence which opens was that of a week of all dangers , either because the government does not hear us, or because the anger will be such that everyone will then take their responsibilities.

The anger of French farmers echo that of their German counterparts, mobilized since the end of December against the reform of agricultural diesel taxation decided by the government of Olaf Scholz.
