Millions of Android phones can control cars: how to use the feature

Some apps can easily start a car, but this requires a specific device or version of the Android OS.

Google calls the feature “Digital Car Key,” and it will work with some phones and vehicles. The service is offered by several automakers, including BMW, BYD, Genesis, Hyundai, Kia and MINI Cooper. Google also claims that this technology is more secure than using a regular car key. The digital car key uses advanced technology that is less vulnerable to unauthorized access than fobs. Plus, you can share your digital car key with others just by sending a text message.

You can stop sharing and set permissions at any time. You can even share your key with other iPhone owners. According to Google, using Digital Car Key requires one of the following Android phones:

1. Pixel 6 and later, including the Pixel Fold and Pixel 8 Pro.
2. Samsung Galaxy S21 and later models. Android devices running Android 12 and later.

An internet connection will also be required. Then you need to check the Google site for car manufacturers and follow the links to find out if this service applies to cars.

Once you're ready to go, simply open the automaker's app and connect your car to your account. Then you need to find the option “Digital car key” and follow the instructions. You will then be prompted to sign in to your Google Account, which will allow you to connect to your Android phone. You need to click “Agree and continue” and then create a car key name. Then select “Start pairing” and wait for the process to complete. To lock or unlock your car, hold the back of your phone up to the door handle.

If the phone is lost or stolen, you can remove access to the key using Google Find My Device.

1. To remotely erase data from the phone and all associated keys, clickErase Device.
2. To suspend the operation of the key and lock the device remotely, you should click “Protect device”.

There is also a function called “Passive entry”, which allows you to enter. On some vehicles, you can also lock and unlock the car remotely.
