Microsoft has begun a forced rollout of the Windows 11 2024 (24H2) update for users of Windows 11 Home and Pro (23H2 and 22H2) versions who are not using devices managed by IT departments. The forced update will freeze the computer until the update is complete, which can take up to two hours.
The company characterizes the launch of the update as a transition to a “new phase”. Unlike previous updates, 24H2 takes significantly longer to install – up to two hours, according to tests. Users have reported installation times exceeding one hour on various laptops.
While users can schedule the update for off-hours and postpone it for a short period of time (up to one week, according to the author of the article), the forced nature of the update deprives users of complete freedom of choice. Microsoft describes the update as a “full code replacement”, which explains the length of the process.
The update includes a number of new features, such as support for USB4 80Gbps, Bluetooth LE Audio for hearing aids, and improved power management. However, given the length of the process and potential for disruptions, Microsoft recommends that users plan enough time for the installation and allow for possible interruptions during the upgrade.
