“35 is a cautionary number”
The re is hope for retail in Germany. In an interview with ZDF heute-journal, Chancellor Angela Merkel announced the prospect of the first easing of the corona measures. “Stable below 35 for two weeks, then we can consider the next step. And with regard to the shops, we say yes, if it’s 35 nationwide, you can open the shops in consultation with the neighboring countries.”
However, one shouldn’t see this value too positively. “
The 35 is, so to speak, a precautionary number from which you should take the first protective measures. Or, conversely, if you fall below it, you can think of larger opening steps again,” explained the Chancellor.

At the federal-state summit on Wednesday, the Prime Minister and the Chancellor agreed to lower the corona guide value from 50 to 35.
The main reason for this was the fear of the corona mutations from Great Britain and South Africa.

Merkel: Openings only with caution
The mutations are also the reason why one still has to be careful, said the Chancellor. “It depends on us and smart opening steps whether we can get through the pandemic without a large third wave or whether we are too careless and still have rising case numbers.” Renewed operation in schools and daycare centers, the opening of hairdressers on March 1st – all of this is an increase in contacts that you have to watch, said Merkel. “That’s why we took 35 for the next step.
Retail representatives, operators of cosmetic and tattoo studios and also the opposition had criticized the tightening of the limit value because it pushed the time for easing even further back. In addition, there is a lack of prospects for many companies, said Stefan Genth, General Manager of the German Trade Association, for example.
Merkel defends vaccination strategy
When it came to the subject of vaccines, Merkel confessed that they might have aroused false expectations among the population.
The chancellor said that the joy about the new vaccine and the speed at which it was developed was so great that it was missed to adequately point out the deficiency. However, she soon promised improvement. “
The first weeks are short. But from March onwards we will have a hard time getting everything wrong.”

When asked why other countries are so much further with the corona vaccination and whether the federal government has invested too little money, Merkel defended the German vaccination strategy.
The re was simply a different approach and the EU did not save at the wrong end. “It doesn’t seem like we were stingy to me. Enough vaccine has been ordered.” Rather, the question is how much vaccine is produced in Europe, said Merkel. “We are very well off because we have Marburg.”
Chancellor admits mistakes before second wave
Merkel also admits errors in corona management in the interview. In the autumn it was “too hesitant” to take action against the second wave. She didn’t have a good feeling, but she supported the loose corona policy. It is all the more important to learn from the mistakes now. “That is why it is so important to me that we act right now and not open too early and then experience that we go up again in the numbers:”
