Day of remembrance of the defenders of Ukraine – August 29 – the date associated with the day of the greatest losses of our troops in Donbas. The day when our defenders left the encirclement in Ilovaisk on August 29, 2014.
In 2019, the Minister of Defense Stepan Poltorak signed the order. He foresees that the entire leadership of the units of the Ministry of Defense and the Armed Forces of Ukraine will commemorate this day in the Hall of Remembrance. Radio MAXIMUM in this article, referring to ArmyInform, will tell you how to remember fallen defenders.
Ukrainian military burial ceremony
Please note that on July 2, 2021, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted a new military burial ceremony , which combines Ukrainian historical traditions (from the Cossack era and the liberation struggles of the beginning of the 20th century) with modern international experience (rituals of the armies of the USA, Israel, Poland, Turkey and Belgium).
The modern military burial ceremony is based both on ancient national traditions and on the requirements of today. The main purpose of the ritual is to pay due respect to the fallen defender of Ukraine and emphasize his significance for the state. The ceremony is intended to remind relatives and the community that they are saying goodbye not just to a person, but to the one thanks to whom Ukraine exists.
Regardless of the number of people present, the financial status of the family or the place of burial, the ritual must be performed with special attention to detail, honoring the memory of the Warrior who gave his life for the Motherland. The military funeral ceremony is a privilege that primarily concerns the fallen defenders of Ukraine and military personnel who previously participated in the defense of the independence and territorial integrity of the country.
The ceremony consists of several stages: transportation, farewell (honoring) and burial. It is organized by the commander of the military unit, the head of the garrison, the head of the territorial recruitment and social support center or the head of the local authority at the place of burial.
Next we will talk in more detail about how we can remember the fallen defenders of Ukraine.
How to commemorate the fallen defenders
The Sunday after Easter in the Orthodox and Greek-Catholic churches marks the beginning of the leading week, during which the dead are commemorated.
On these days of commemoration, clergymen and believers pray for the repose of the souls of fallen defenders of Ukraine and peaceful victims of war. At the same time, this week there are prayers for living soldiers, as well as for people who were forced to leave their homes because of the war.
However, this is not the only time when it is appropriate and necessary to remember the dead. Military graves in cemeteries remain among the most visited – people come to them to pay their respects on other days as well.
For example, in Lviv, funeral services are held on the Field of Mars every month, on every last Saturday.
< p>Planting trees is also a kind of commemoration: both individual trees and entire avenues of memory symbolize the connection with those who have passed away. Our ancestors believed that the souls of the dead live in trees.
As in ancient times, so now, dying on the battlefield for one's country is the highest manifestation of courage and sacrifice. Warriors are those who put the Motherland above their own lives.
