Media: Italy to spend 7.5 billion euros on new Eurofighters

Italy plans to spend just under 7.5 billion euros over the next 11 years on 24 new Eurofighters.

This is stated in a document of the Ministry of Defense, which reached the Reuters agency on Monday, writes “European Truth”.

The purchase will allow the fleet of the Italian Air Force to be updated in view of the need to decommission the outdated Eurofighter and Tornado aircraft.< /p>

The Eurofighter Typhoon twin-engine supersonic fighters are being built by a consortium of Airbus, BAE Systems and Leonardo.

Given that the order will be placed by the Italian Air Force, Leonardo will be appointed as the prime contractor .

“The program… will have a multi-year time frame from approximately 2024 to 2034… for a total of €7.477 billion,” – the defense document says.

It also says that €690 million in funding has already been earmarked, with the remaining €6.8 billion to be funded through mechanisms to be determined in the future.

These aircraft will replace 26 aircraft that Italy plans to replace starting in 2028, and the contract will include maintenance of the aircraft and training of personnel.

By mid-August, the relevant parliamentary committees are due to deliver an opinion on the procurement program presented late last week by the Italian government, which will pave the way for final approval.

Earlier in June, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced the purchase of 20 more Eurofighter fighters as part of a program to strengthen the country's armed forces.

And the leader of the German opposition flew behind the wheel of a Eurofighter fighter.
