While they haven't even entered production yet, the next two Avengers have already undergone some serious changes. Recently, Marvel Studios preferred to go back to basics and decided to call the Russo brothers back to direct Avengers 5 and 6. Zack Snyder has just given his opinion on this comeback.
The return of the Russo brothers
Initially, Avengers 5 and 6 should have had a completely different face than what finally awaits us. The first big change lies in the identity of the big bad. Originally, Kang was to be the antagonist of this new diptych. Introduced in Loki and developed in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, we still don't know if we'll see Kang the Conqueror again. In any case, one thing is certain, if we do see him again, he will have changed face. Indeed, Marvel Studios preferred to part ways with Jonathan Majors, who played the character, following his conviction for domestic violence. Since then, Robert Downey Jr. has been recalled to play a new version of Fatalis, the new future big bad guy of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
The other change lies in the direction. Initially, it was rumored that Destin Daniel Cretton, the director of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, was going to direct the next Avengers. But here too Marvel Studios changed its tune and decided to call back the Russo brothers. The latter have already directed 4 MCU films: Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), Captain America: Civil War (2016), Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019). Faced with the changes in the storyline, Marvel Studios has therefore preferred to cover its rear by recalling regulars. Between Robert Downey Jr. and the Russo brothers, we are clearly returning to basics.
Zack Snyder's opinion
During a recent appearance on the ReelBlend podcast, the filmmaker Zack Snyder has given his opinion on the return of the Russo brothers. Zack Snyder is also a regular in superhero films. The latter has worked several times with DC and was even one of the main workers of the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). He even launched this universe connected to the cinema in 2013 with Man of Steel. He is also the director of the immense Watchmen: The Guardians, considered by many fans of the genre as one of the best superhero films of all time. Suffice to say that the guy knows a lot about the subject:
I think it's great for them. They're great, and they've done a really great job at Marvel. I'm sure they're going to do something crazy again. They're very talented guys, and I think the result will be something cool. I think it's time to shake up this whole universe.
Shaking up this universe by bringing back artists who are regulars? That's a pretty paradoxical comment. If Marvel is bringing back the Russo brothers, it's precisely to return to a form of solidity of yesteryear. The Russo brothers are excellent Yes Man, but we doubt that they will be able to truly revolutionize the MCU, in any way. In any case, it is pretty cool of Zack Snyder to support his colleagues. The latter will soon be back on Netflix with a new animated series: Twilight of the Gods, expected on September 19 on the platform.
