This is the debate that has many fans on tenterhooks: is Scarlet Witch really dead at the end of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness? Actress Elizabeth Olsen has just commented on her status in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), and discussed a possible return.
The end of the Scarlet Witch?
Played by Elizabeth Olsen since the post-credits scene of Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), the Scarlet Witch has had a very particular trajectory within the MCU. She made her debut as an antagonist in Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) before switching sides and joining the Avengers thanks to the wise intervention of Hawkeye. Then, in Captain America: Civil War (2016), she becomes a danger to others. She has difficulty controlling her powers, and becomes a real time bomb.
In Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame she experiences a real trauma when her beloved Vision is coldly murdered by Thanos. An ordeal that will push her to her limits. In WandaVision she creates an entire alternative society isolated from the rest of the world thanks to her powers. A decision that does not please ordinary mortals. But it is in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madnessthat the young woman completely loses control. She decides to travel through the multiverse to find a reality in which her children are still alive. A plot that makes her the villain of this second Doctor Strange. A brilliant risk-taking, magnified by the staging inspired by Sam Raimi. At the end of the film, unsurprisingly, The Scarlet Witch sacrifices herself to save her former allies and destroy the Darkhold, in a burst of lucidity.

Officially, the Scarlet Witch is therefore deceased in the MCU. But as is often the case with the Marvel universe, death is equivalent to a little flu. And the writers of Marvel Studiosalways find more or less credible ways to bring their characters back. In fact, we would like The Scarlet Witch to come back. A charismatic, emblematic character from the comics, and above all ultra powerful, it is hard to see how she could succumb to her injuries at the end of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. We are still waiting for the series Agatha All Along, which begins this Wednesday on Disney+, to clarify her official situation in the MCU.
Jimmy Kimmel recently met Elizabeth Olsenand then asked him if his character in the MCU was really dead:
I think so. I suppose so. There was a red light of energy when I died. I think I died. But I would like to leave a window open. I had so much fun on those movies. I would like to find a clever way to bring me back from the dead. We need to find clever writers to make sense of a possible return. I'm open to ideas in any case.
Elizabeth Olsen, like us, would like to see a little more of The Scarlet Witch. It's true that her death leaves us wanting more, and that this iconic character probably deserved a better conclusion. We hope that Marvel Studios still has ideas up its sleeve to develop Wanda Maximoff. Jimmy Kimmel also asked her if she thinks Wanda is more powerful than Thor:
Yes, I think so. In theory, Wanda is stronger than Thor. No? I don't know. I've never carried the hammer. I don't know what would happen. But I think I could probably handle it and go to inside her mind.
In short, we hope that The Scarlet Witch will return. Even if, for the moment, Marvel Studios does not seem to have any more ideas to exploit this character. Maybe Agatha All Along will give us some answers.
