For Martin Scorsese, director of the legend behind Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas or Shutter Island and The Wolf of Wall Street, Marvel films are not cinema. An idea obviously shared by Quentin Tarantino (Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill, Inglourious Basterds, Django Unchained), for whom the directors of Marvel films are simply mercenaries. And after attacking to the directors, that's it! that Tarantino begins to target their actors.
Tarantino won't stop
In an interview, Quentin Tarantino did not hesitate; to call directors who agreed to work for Marvel “mercenaries”. The list of MCU directors, however, includes big Hollywood names, from Taika Waititi to Jon Favreau via James Gunn, Ryan Coogler and Sam Raimi. But for Tarantino, “you have to be a mercenary to do these things“. A position that the American director supported during his participation in the podcast 2 Bears, 1 Cave:
“I mean it's one of – and I'm not even belittling them frankly, to tell you the truth. But it's one of the marvelizing legacies of Hollywood movies.“.
Responding to a sarcastic joke about his love of the MCU, Tarantino continued on his launched:
“I do not like them. No, I don't hate them. OK. But I don't like them. It's true. I mean, look, I used to collect Marvel comics like crazy when I was a kid. There's an aspect that if these movies came out when I was 20, I'd be totally happy and love them.
I mean, it wouldn't be the only films that would be made. They would be films among others. But, you know, I'm almost 60, so yeah. No, I'm not that excited. to their topic.”
You will have understood by now, Tarantino does not like Marvel films and does not hesitate to talk about it. let it know. But beyond of his lack of affection towards the films of the MCU, the director does not consider that their stars are the actors. Robert Downey Jr, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, the MCU has some big names in Hollywood. But for Tarantino, they are not the real stars of Marvel:
“Part of the Marvel-ization of Hollywood is… you have all these actors who became famous playing these characters. But they are not movie stars. Not true ? Captain America is the star. Or Thor is the star. I mean, I'm not the first person to say ça. I think ça has been said a million times, you know, but, you know, but it's like, you know, it's these franchise characters that become a star.”
For Tarantino, the stars would not be the actors who make up the MCU, but rather their characters. But for many, it is difficult to separate Robert Downey Jr from Iron Man or Hugh Jackman from Wolverine. However, it happens that the characters of the MCU change actors. We think in particular of; Hulk with Edward Norton then Mark Ruffalo and soon Thaddeus Ross, incarnated; so far by the late William Hurt.
