Marta Kostyuk advanced to the third round of the Australian Open

Ukrainian tennis player Marta Kostyuk and Romanian athlete Elena Gabriela Ruse made it to the third round of the Australian Open Tennis Championship (Australian Open), reports Sport.ua.

In In the second round of the doubles competition, the Ukrainian-Romanian duet won a strong-willed victory over the 9th seeded American Nicole Melikar-Martinez and Australian Ellen Perez – 3:6, 7:6 (9:7), 6:0.

Now Kostyuk and Rousse will meet in the quarter-final duel with the winners of the confrontation between the Brazilian-Chinese tandem, seeded under the 7th number, Beatriz Addad Maya – Zhang Shuai with Czechs Miriam Kolodzeyova and Marketa Vondroushovo.

Marta Kostyuk remains the only representative of Ukraine at the Australian Open. In singles, she failed to reach the fourth round of the Australian Open. She was stopped by third seeded Jessica Pegula – 6:0; 6:2. Also, Angelina Kalinina and Ekaterina Beindl (Kozlova) finished their performances.

Australian Open – the first Grand Slam tournament of the season, which takes place in Melbourne from January 16 to 29 on the hard surface. Australian tennis player Ashleigh Barty is the current winner. She announced her retirement in March 2022.  The total prize fund of the Australian Open is more than $50 million.

BAGNET recalls that tennis players from Russia and Belarus  were admitted to the Australian Open, however, the flags of these states were banned.
