Meta owner Mark Zuckerberg is eliminating censorship and fact-checking programs on his social networks Facebook, Instagram and Threads. He will also work with US President-elect Donald Trump to combat censorship around the world.
This was stated in a statement by Meta on Tuesday, January 7.
Meta is abandoning its fact-checking system, which involved the involvement of third-party certified fact-checkers. Instead, it is introducing “community notes,” similar to the algorithm that powers Elon Musk's X platform.
Republicans have long criticized Meta's fact-checking system and fact-checking in general as unfair and biased against Democrats.
Zuckerberg added that he would work with the Trump administration to “repel governments around the world that are harassing American companies and increasing censorship”:
“The United States has the strongest constitutional protections for free speech in the world. In Europe, there are a growing number of laws that increase censorship… China has banned our apps… The only way to push back against this global trend — it's support for the US government,” — Zuckerberg noted.
