Former President Iván Duque talks about how his security was during his government.

In the prologue of the letter, known by the magazine Semana, Vargas Llosa highlights< b> -with great fanfare- the management of the former head of state, who became known for the social outbreakproduct of the tax reform that his government wanted to implement in 2021, and which mainly affected the middle class, with severe taxes.

From April to June of the previous year, the main cities of Colombia were submerged, in the midst of a crisis due to the Covid-19 pandemic, in violent protests that were characterized by police brutality, attacks on protesters by the Force Public and a series of events that, to date, continue to cause harsh criticism of Duque.

However, the Peruvian writer describes the predecessor of today's President Gustavo Petro as a “magnificent president” and highlights several of the skills that Duque demonstrated leading the country in one of the most difficult times in its republican history.

“President Iván Duque Márquez, who assumed the leadership of Colombia on August 7, 2018, was a magnificent president, respectful of freedom and legality, who went out of his way to bring good ideas to Colombia and to whom Colombians, I am sure, they will miss it a lot”, says the novelist.

What's more, he assures that one of the main achievements of the sponsored person of Álvaro Uribe Vélez was to move Colombia forward in the midst of the pandemic. “His policy against the coronavirus, that catastrophe that fell on the world unexpectedly, was excellent and I think Colombians will recognize it. He carried out a project to vaccinate and care for the sick that covered a good part of the country, and that will always be remembered by his compatriots”, he mentions.

Even the Vargas Llosa himself acknowledges that Colombians failed to understand several of the ideas that Duque wanted to carry out when he was a tenant of the Casa de Nariño and that, in his opinion, “they were always inspired by the best ideas of progress and improvement of the country”.

Although the former president won the 2018 elections with the far-right Democratic Center party, led by his political mentor -also former president Uribe-, the Peruvian writer believes that Duque is of liberal ideology.< /b>

Of course, he did not hesitate to acknowledge that those who most welcomed the Duqué government were businessmen and the private sector, whom the former uribista ruler defended tooth and nail during his years in power. “These ideas were not very easy to apply during that convulsive period in which he led Colombia, but he did it systematically as far as it was possible to do it, and I think both businessmen how workers will recognize it once this difficult transition is over and what awaits the Colombian future”, he points out.

Vargas Llosa, who has declared himself one of the greatest supporters of Álvaro Uribe, assures that he does not see the future of Colombia with good eyes, now that Duque is not leading it and it is in the hands of the first left-wing president . Thus concluded his prologue:

“President Petro has already stated many points with which it is difficult to agree. But let's let time speak and, in this sense, I am sure that Colombians will value Duque's management highly, and will miss him.”
