This was the first confrontation between both tennis players, and it was one where the Colombian was initially the favorite, taking into account her current position in the WTA ranking. While Osorio is ranked 83rd, Friedsam is currently ranked 184th in the WTA ranking. However, the German had already shown that she could be a difficult rival after beating Sachia Vickery in the previous rounds and especially Sophie Chang, current number 61 in the world.

At the first change Friedsam already put the Colombian in trouble by breaking her serve. Although Osorio recovered, the German broke her serve again in the seventh game and controlled both at the net and in the back, with which the set ended 6-3 in favor of Friedsam.

In the second set, Osorio came out with determination and broke his rival's serve in the first few games, but Friedsam's baseline game once again balanced the process of the match. Osorio's errors on serve allowed Friedsam to win the second and final set 6-3, thus concluding the Colombian's elimination from the competition.

This represents a new setback for Osorio, who throughout the year has shown difficulties in performing at the level shown in 2021. After concluding his participation in the US Open in which he reached the second round, he has been overtaken by rivals who identify their shortcomings in the service and develop their game around this factor. As proof of the above, Osorio racked up six double faults and gave up his serve a total of five times throughout the match. These failures ended up being decisive in the final result.

With this victory and a more than deserved “giant killer” status, Friedsam will face North American Ann Li in the semifinals, a rival whom Osorio already defeated in the first round of the US Open. For her part, Osorio heads to Chile to participate in the Colina WTA 125 , where she appears as the second highest ranked player in the WTA, only behind the Montenegrin Danka Kovinic, number 79 of the world. This privileged position ensures her a place as one of the tournament's top seeds, where players who were already part of the Top 10 in previous years will also participate, such as the Serbian Kristina Mladenovic and the Italian Sara Errani.

Maria Camila Osorio's last tournament in 2022 is expected to be the WTA 125 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. In it, the presence of the Egyptian Mayar Sharif stands out, current number 50 of the WTA ranking and who has just won a WTA 250 tournament in Parma, Italy in October. Concluded his presence in both tournaments, Osorio will take a vacation while he prepares for the 2023 season, with a view to recovering his best place to date in the ranking, the 33rd he held in April 2022 when he reached the finals of the WTA 250 of Monterrey, Mexico.
