The Bureau of Independent Investigations (BEI) will look into the violent event that occurred Tuesday morning in the district of Chicoutimi during where Saguenay police officers opened fire on a man.

The event in question provoked a large police operation Tuesday morning on rue des Hospitalières, not far from the University of Quebec at Chicoutimi (UQAC).

According to witnesses and images from a video viewed by Radio-Canada, a shirtless man walking on the sidewalk was shot dead by two police officers who held him at gunpoint. It appears that the man was holding a knife in his hand and walked towards the police who fired shots.

The body on the ground, covered with a sheet, was visible from outside the security perimeter.

Traffic is prohibited on a large portion of rue des Hospitalières.

Saguenay Public Security agents are on the scene, but the organization refuses to give more details at this time. No less than ten patrol cars protect the scene. Members of the Bureau of Independent Investigations are on their way from Montreal to inspect the place.

Rue des Hospitalières is closed to all traffic between rue Chabanel and chemin Sydenham, where a security perimeter has been erected.
