Major RCMP strikes in Montreal

Around fifteen searches took place Tuesday morning in Montreal, in four businesses, sixteen residences and two vehicles.

Nearly 400 police officers from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) were deployed to Montreal on Tuesday morning in a large-scale operation to execute around twenty search warrants as part of Project Chrome, which aims to counter an alleged criminal organization .

The major operation follows a collaborative investigation by the Joint Organized Crime Investigation Unit with the Joint Proceeds of Crime Unit and the Canada Revenue Agency.

According to our information, the operation targets the Lopez-Oliverio family clan, suspected of cocaine trafficking, money laundering and being involved in illegal gambling .

Around fifteen arrests have been made, but no appearance has yet taken place. The suspects are not expected to appear before the end of the investigation which will continue in the coming days. They are currently detained at RCMP headquarters.

Four intervention groups (ITG) are also on site to allow simultaneous strikes. These are the tactical groups of Quebec, Ontario, New Brunswick and British Columbia.

An RCMP command post was set up at the corner of Fleury Street East in Montreal on Tuesday morning.

< p class="StyledBodyHtmlParagraph-sc-48221190-4 hnvfyV">The targeted establishments are mainly places owned by the Oliverio family such as cafes, restaurants and buildings, especially in the northeast of the metropolis. According to our information, there are four businesses, sixteen residences and two vehicles.

The operation stems from an investigation by the Joint Organized Crime Investigation Unit.

A command post has been installed at the corner of Fleury Est and J.-J.-Gagnier streets.
