The entire Potterhead community is in mourning after learning of the death of British actress Maggie Smith. Her family announced her death this Friday, September 27, 2024 at the age of 89. It was her sons Chris Larkins and Toby Stephens who announced this sad news, declaring that the actor who played Professor McGonagall in the cinema “died peacefully in hospital early this morning. The British actress ““was a very private person but was with her friends and family at the end of her life.” Maggie Smith leaves behind two sons and five grandchildren who say they are “devastated by the loss of their extraordinary mother and grandmother.” The actress's family would like to thank all the expressions of affection and messages of support from the public and ask that their privacy be respected.

Maggie Smith is one of the greatest British actresses. With a rich filmography both in cinema and on the small screen, she is also one of the most awarded. In fact, during her career, she received two Oscars, the first for her role in The Golden Years of Miss Brodiein 1969 and the other for her supporting role in California Hotel in 1978. Maggie Smith is one of only six actresses to have won both an Oscar for Best Actress and an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. She also takes part in the television series Downton Abbeyin which she played the character of Violet Crawley, the Dowager Countess of Grantham, for twelve years.
