Danny Maciocia did not fall out of his chair when the Jacksonville Jaguars announced the hiring of Tom Gamble to the team of new general manager Trent Baalke.
Gamble will therefore have remained with the Alouettes for a season that did not take place due to the pandemic. He had been hired a few days after Maciocia’s appointment as general manager of the Montreal dealership.
“I was not confused when Tom confirmed to me that he would join the Jaguars,” Maciocia told the Journal de Montreal. He informed me of his steps from the start.
“As for its replacement, I am already working on the file. I am in the process of developing scenarios. There is nothing fixed at the moment. ”
In January 2020, the soccer man was particularly proud of Gamble’s arrival on the management team. The American benefited from several contacts in the circles of the NFL and American universities.
“Tom and I have been friends for a long time,” Maciocia said. We’ve known each other for 15 years. We talk to each other two to three times a day either on the phone or text message.
“I’m sure if he sees a quality player for our team, he will give me a sign. Thanks to his contribution over the past year, we have managed to significantly expand our network of contacts. ”
On another note, the Alouettes signed defensive end Datone Jones to a contract on Wednesday. The former first-round pick, who played 68 games in the NFL, decided to try his luck north of the border.
“It was teamwork on this file. Everyone contributed especially our defensive line coach, Todd Howard, who led him at UCLA, explained Maciocia. The two have always kept in touch.
“We wanted him to sign a contract last April, but he decided to join the Las Vegas Raiders.”
Alumni of the NFL have often had the unfortunate tendency to look down on the CFL upon arriving on Canadian soil. We still remember the setbacks of Troy Smith and Chad Johnson in particular.
“We’ve had several conversations with him and he knows very well what he’s getting into,” said Maciocia. When they come into our league, NFL alumni don’t falter on the physical side, but on the mental side. They realize that there are some great players in our league. ‘”
In recent seasons, the Alouettes have struggled to put pressure on the opposing quarterback. They have gone to great lengths to find defensive ends who can fulfill this mission.
Besides Jones, the coaches can’t wait to see what Jamal Davis and Curtis Cothran can bring to the table. Not to mention that Maciocia’s shopping is not over yet.
As for John Bowman, he has yet to decide if he will continue his career in 2021.
Over the past year, the Alouettes’ football operations team has researched 1,800 football players, 800 of whom have played less than two seasons in the NFL.
Former Alouettes quarterback manager and offensive coordinator Marcus Brady has just been appointed offensive coordinator for the Indianapolis Colts.
