Lviv ex-policeman received a 136,000 UAH fine for interfering with SBU electronic systems

The Halytskyi District Court of Lviv found former policeman Rostyslav Yurkiv guilty of illegally interfering with the work of information and communication systems used by the Security Service of Ukraine and fined him 136,000 UAH. In addition, he must pay 107,500 UAH for forensic examinations.

According to the case materials, Rostyslav Yurkiv has worked in the police since 2001. In 2017, he was appointed as an operations officer of the operational and technical measures department of the Main Police Department in the Lviv region. This position involves working with information obtained from covert investigative actions and controlling the server room of the police department. The verdict states that the accused purchased technical equipment and installed it in the communications cabinet of the server room, which is in the building of the main police department at 3 General Hryhorenko Square.

The SBU conducted searches in the server room of the department in August 2023. Law enforcement officers stated that they did not approve the installation of technical means that violated the information routing procedure.

During the court hearings, Rostyslav Yurkiv fully admitted his guilt. He explained that from 2001 to 2023 he worked in the Main Department of National Police of Lviv region in various positions. Yurkiv admitted that he installed equipment used to extract information from electronic communication networks. However, he assured that he was following orders from his management and did not know that such equipment had not been approved by the SBU.

Judge Olga Krotova found Rostyslav Yurkiv guilty of illegal interference in the operation of information and communication systems (Part 3 of Article 361 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine) and fined him 136 thousand. UAH. In addition, he must pay UAH 107.5 thousand for conducting expert research. The verdict can be appealed in the Lviv Court of Appeal.
