The president-elect of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, underwent surgery on Sunday to remove a lesion in his larynx detected in recent medical tests, reported the Sao Paulo hospital where he was treated, and he was discharged on Monday.

“Good morning. Already at home, after a small procedure yesterday. All resolved and fine. Have a good week for everyone”, said Lula on his Twitter account.

The 77-year-old president-elect has been hospitalized since Sunday, upon returning from his trip, “to carry out a laryngoplasty for the removal of a lecoplasia(white lesion) on the left vocal cord,” the Syrian Lebanese Hospital said in a statement.

Leukoplakia, a white plaque that appears on the mucous membranes and sometimes When it turns cancerous, it was detected on her left vocal cord before her trip to Egypt last week to attend the United Nations climate summit.

”The procedure showed no neoplasia”, added the medical report, ruling out tumors due to an abnormal increase in cells.

Before leaving, his team reported that Lula's test results were “normal”, confirming the “complete remission” of the larynx tumor detected in 2011.

Lula was a smoker for 50 years and gave up smoking in 2010, after being hospitalized for hypertension.

The cancer was detected at the end of his presidency (2003-2011). In 2012, doctors announced his “total recovery” after chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatments.

Lula will be the oldest head of state when he takes office in Brazil on January 1 .
