Lower oil price heralds full return of gas tax to Alberta

From April 1, Gasoline and diesel prices will increase in Alberta, with the full return of the provincial fuel tax.

Finance Minister province, Nate Horner, announced it will increase to 13 cents, an increase of four cents.

The Alberta government is committed to meeting the rate schedule we established for the fuel tax relief program last year. When oil prices rise, the fuel tax rate will decrease, he said.

After being suspended for the entire In 2023, the tax was partially restored to nine cents per liter of gasoline last January.

The tax is adjusted according to the West Texas Intermediate (WTI) oil benchmark price. When it drops below US$90, the tax resumes, reaching its maximum when WTI falls below US$80.

This measure was put in place in April 2022 by former Alberta premier Jason Kenney, who suspended the collection of the provincial fuel tax. The suspension was extended the following year by Danielle Smith's government.

Nate Horner said the province would continue to examine the tax on fuels on a quarterly basis and would provide a further update before the end of June.

Ottawa's carbon tax increase takes place will also smell at the pump. The federal tax is expected to rise from about 14 cents to more than 17 cents per gallon of gasoline starting April 1.
