Lithuania will consider continuing the ban on broadcasting Russian channels

The Lithuanian government supports the proposal to extend the ban on retransmission of programs from Russian and Belarusian channels, reports the Delfi portal.

It is now assumed that the latest restriction will be in effect until October 1, 2024.

The amendments to the laws initiated by the Ministry of Culture propose extending the ban on unlimited time and provide that these restrictions will remain in effect as long as the National Security Strategy considers Russia and Belarus as countries posing a danger and threat to Lithuania.

"It is proposed to continue to apply measures limiting the dissemination of information, threatening the national security of Lithuania, and protecting Lithuanian society from disinformation and other manipulations of public information,” – says the government's certificate.

After approval by the Cabinet of Ministers, the issue of extending the ban will be transferred to the Seimas.

Last September, parliament extended the ban on the retransmission and distribution on the Internet of radio and television programs of companies created, directly or indirectly managed, controlled or financed by Russia or Belarus. The exception applies only to channels that are distributed by countries of the European Union.
