Liberal MP Housefather reflects on his future after Palestinian motion | Middle East, the eternal conflict

Montreal federal MP Anthony Housefather declared Tuesday that&#x27 ;he was “reflecting” on his future within the Liberal Party after the adoption on Monday in the Commons of a New Democratic motion, heavily amended by the government, on support for a Palestinian state.

Mr. Housefather was one of three Liberal MPs who voted Monday evening against the final motion, which recommended working toward the establishment of the State of Palestine as part of the United Nations. a negotiated two-state solution.

The original New Democrats' motion instead planned, among other things, to officially recognize the State of Palestine.

The two other Liberal MPs who voted against, former Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino and Manitoba MP Ben Carr, both say they are disappointed with the way the process went. ;last minute amendments, Monday.

Neither, however, is considering a change in #x27;political allegiance.

Mr. Housefather maintains that when his Liberal colleagues gave the New Democratic Party a standing ovation over the motion on Monday, he asked himself for the first time in his life if he was still sure he wanted to stay. within this caucus.

The member for Mount Royal says that, even if the final version was better than the first, the Liberals should simply have vote against the original which, according to him, did not even mention the existential threat facing Israel and Jews around the world.

All Bloc MPs present Monday evening voted for the motion and all Conservatives voted against.
