The Tour of Poland 79, which starts on Saturday to travel more than 1,200 kilometers through the east and south of the country, will be held this year under the slogan “race for peace”.
“It is a form of support for the Ukrainian people, as well as a way of transmitting the values of brotherhood and peace”, the organizers indicated on the race's website.
Up to 153 runners belonging to 22 teams will face the 1,226.7 kilometers of this race divided into seven stages, between Kielce and Krakow, three of which are mountain.
Some stages of this WorldTour level event will be held near the border with Ukraine and will pass through cities such as Lublin, Chelm, or Przemysl, which were among the first to welcome thousands of Ukrainian refugees who fled from the Russian invasion.
The organizers acknowledged that after the outbreak of the war in Ukraine on February 24, several voices called for a change in the route, a possibility that was finally rejected. “We want the Tour of Poland to show the whole world that Poland is a safe country, that you can come here”, declared the president of the race, Czeslaw Lang.
