Latvian President: Possibility of closing the Baltic Sea must be "kept at hand"

Latvian President Edgars Rinkėvičs, speaking about the security of the Baltic region, stated that the issue of its possible closure should be “kept at hand”.

The statement of the Latvian President is cited by Delfi, reports “European Truth”.

Answering a question about how to increase the security of critical infrastructure in the Baltic Sea, Rinkėvičs said that it is necessary to strengthen patrols at sea and more actively introduce sanctions against the “shadow fleet” of Russia.

At the same time, according to the president, the issue of the possible closure of the Baltic Sea should be “kept at hand”, which would be a very serious step that has already been voiced at the level of ideas and against which at one time there were various objections have been expressed.

The President of Latvia added that about 2,000 different vessels are in the Baltic Sea every day, and it is impossible to control all of them.

As reported, the Baltic and Scandinavian countries plan to strengthen monitoring of vessels in the Baltic Sea.

Let us recall that in recent days several submarine cables have been damaged in the Baltic, after which the countries of the region and NATO announced enhanced security measures.

It was reported that Finland detained the Eagle S vessel due to a rupture in a communication cable in the Baltic Sea. According to media reports, equipment was found on the ship that could be used to spy on planes and ships.
