Latvia declares its readiness to refuse participation in the Olympics if Russians and Belarusians go there

This will happen if the war continues in Ukraine at the time of the Games, reports Delfi with reference to the statement of the President of the Latvian Olympic Committee, Georges Tikmer.

“The position of Latvia is as follows: if these games were held now and athletes would participate in them from Russia and Belarus, I think that the Latvian team would not have gone to these games. We hope that the war will end, Ukraine will win. It will be a completely new situation and new rules of the game. Of course, in this case, Latvian athletes will also be able to participate in such Olympic Games,” Tikmer said.

It is reported that Latvia will encourage its sports federations to turn to their international colleagues with a request not to allow representatives of the Russian Federation and Belarus to participate in competition.

At the same time, the Olympic Council of Asia stated that the athletes of the aggressor countries will be allowed to participate in the Asian Games 2023, but it is not known whether they will be able to meet the qualification criteria.
