Kaamelott: 8 monsters from the saga of Alexandre Astier

The world of Kaamelott is populated by monsters of all kinds. While these creatures are mostly invisible on screen due to the series' limited budget, their presence is nevertheless a real issue in the series. In this period when Halloween is fast approaching, we therefore looked at the creatures that roam around King Arthur and the knights of Kaamelott.

#8 Unicorns

So, okay, at first glance, the unicorn isn't exactly the most disturbing creature in the herd. However, in the world of Kaamelott, this legendary equine seems quite different. Indeed, in the episode The Escort (episode 88, season 1), when Arthur summons the Knight Bohort, he is worried about taking the road in the middle of the night and crossing the forest. Especially since, shortly before this summons, a very strange sound, between a roar and a cry, was heard, and that, according to Lord Léodagan, it is not impossible that it is a unicorn (or an elf). In the end, we don't really know what the creature in question looks like, but what is certain is that a unicorn capable of emitting such a sound would be far from the beautiful image that we usually have of it.

#7 The Dragons

Back to a much more classic monster in this universe of knights and fantasy: the dragon. In Kaamelott,Dragons are numerous, and the Knights of the Round Table regularly confront them. In the episode The Dragon of the Tunnels (season 1, episode 86), we even have the right to two dragons: one that lurks in a cave and a second, much larger (300 pounds according to Perceval), that threatens outside.Dragons are a real hobby horse of the series, which evokes them very regularly. In season 6, which serves as a prequel to the series, when Merlin comes to fetch young Arthur from Rome, he immediately asks if it is true that there are still dragons in Brittany.

If they are not visible in the series,However, they are regularly present in various forms in the comic strips taken from Kaamelott. However, the series being above all humorous, the dragon is much more often the subject of jokes than of fear, as in the episode The Fury of the Dragon (season 1, episode 91), where adragon presumably sick defecates on the knights Yvain and Gauvain, who return to the king covered in dragon “droppings”.

#6 The Vampires

And yes, this may seem somewhat surprising if you are not necessarily familiar with the universe of Kaamelott, but Vampires are indeed present in this reinvention of the myth of the Knights of the Round Table. Thus, in the episode The Bite of the Dacian (season 2, episode 65), it is King Arthur himself who is changed into a vampire by a lord from Eastern Europe.Having become a creature of the night, he threatens to impale anyone who would kill a wolf, has poor control over the element of fire, seems capable of moving very quickly and, of course, threatens to drain the blood of the inhabitants of Kaamelott, starting with his mistress Demeter. It is finally the sorcerer Elias of Kelliwic'h who will find a potion capable of freeing him from vampiric contamination. We also note in this episode that Merlin knows vampires well, since he knows that in general, the only way to get rid of them is to cut off their heads and plant a stake in their hearts.

#5 The Extraterrestrials

Another creature whose presence may seem surprising, but which seems beautiful and well present in Kaamelott. It should be noted, however, that aliens are present in very different forms in Kaamelott. First of all, some characters have seen or witnessed phenomenathat can be related to the classic folklore surrounding the various UFO stories. For example, in Arthur's kingdom, the Silbury Hill mound seems to be at the heart of many alien-related events. It is not known exactly what happens there, but according to the Queen, in the episode Silbury Hill II (season 3, episode 22), there is talk of “orange balls” streaking across the sky full speed.

Crop circles are also regularly described in the fields, and Perceval's adoptive parents even claim to have discovered him in one of them, suggesting in passing that Perceval might be linked in some way to extraterrestrials. It is also noted that in addition toa strange fascination and knowledge about the sciences related to space, Perceval never hesitates to cross the supernatural portals that open before him. It is also during one of these crossings that Perceval meets another type of extraterrestrial, in the person of the heroes of Star Wars, since in the episode Stargate II(season 3, episode 43), the knight arrives on Tatooine and steals Luke's green Jedi sword.

#4 Zombies

Zombies seem very dear to Alexandre Astier's heart, who even made them the main threat of the very first comic strip Kaamelott: The Army of Necromancer. In this first volume, Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table set out to find what is triggering the proliferation of zombie cases in the kingdom and end up facing a necromancer and his army of grotesque undead, seemingly straight out of Evil Dead 3. However, zombies are also present in the series, as we learnin the episode Haunted II (season 3, episode 48) that the knight Yvain hates and fears them in particular. And in the episode The Evil Crypt (season 3, episode 76), we discover that Karadoc and Perceval are incapable of understanding the very concept of the undead, which is both dead and alive.

#3 Ogres

Like the dragons we mentioned earlier, ogres are creatures that are more easily encountered in fairy tale universes and other fantasy stories, and which are also very much present in the universe of Kaamelott. In the episode Padraig's Cave (season 1, episode 34), Arthur, Léodagan and Bohort must face one of these terrible monsters after the Lady of the Lake sent them on a mission. This ogre, called “the two-headed ogre”,who guards a gigantic emerald, is not the only one that the Knights of the Round Table have had to face, since in the episode Arthur's World (season 2, episode 15), Arthur, suddenly seized by a desire to play like a child with food, remembers old battles during his game. It is then that we discover that one of the threats that marked the king was the “hill ogre”, here reconstituted by an agglomeration of sausage.

#2 Ghosts

Ghosts are everywhere in Kaamelott. Between Arthur's father, Uther Pendragon, who haunts the corridors of Kaamelott (Hanted, season 1, episode 52) and who can even manifest himself by possessing the body of his former mistress, Ygerne of Tintagel, to terrify his stepdaughter, as we discover in the episode The Vigil (season 3, episode 68), and the ghosts of enemies defeated by Karadoc who come to haunt his nightmares (Alone in the Dark, season 3, episode 92), ghosts are a real threat. If Arthur strangely does not take them seriously and seems particularly skeptical about it, they are nevertheless among the rare creatures of which we are sure to have seen and heard them. We thus hear the voice of a vengeful ghost that threatens Yvain and Gauvain in the episode Haunted II (season 3, episode 48), and the end of Kaamelott – Premier Volet reveals the existence of the ghost of Lancelot's father, King Ban, who is now a gigantic ghost haunting his old fortress and terrifying Guinevere and her maid at night.

#1 Adult Rabbits

As with the unicorns we mentioned at the beginning of this top, it is Bohort who reveals to us this other terrible danger that lurks in the woods around Kaamelott: the adult rabbit! Indeed, during the episode A Noise in the Night(season 1, episode 61), this knight, particularly cowardly, tells Arthur of his fears related to the wild creatures that could prowl around the camp at night and asks him in particular to swear to him that there is nothing more dangerous in the area than the adult rabbit. If, obviously, it is above all a dialogue whose exaggeration is the comic spring, one can also have fun seeing a real danger there, which would be here a tribute to the film Holy Grail by Monty Python. This film is also a humorous version of the quest for the Grail, in which one of the best-known scenes sees the knights of the Round Table having to confront a terrible bloodthirsty rabbit who violently slaughters half of their team.
