A jury found a teenager guilty of second-degree murder for stabbing another teenager, Jannai Dopwell-Bailey, 16, in front of his school in the Côte-des-Neiges neighborhood on October 18, 2021.

The tragedy occurred in front of Mile End School, at the intersection of Victoria Street and Van Horne Avenue, where Jannai Dopwell-Bailey studied . The young man, who had taken refuge in the school while waiting for help, was transported to hospital where he was pronounced dead a little later.

The identity of the accused cannot be revealed because he was a minor at the time of the facts.

The Crown Prosecutor , Simon Robin, declared in a press briefing that he will ask Judge Annie Émond to impose an adult sentence on the accused.

In Canada, the minimum sentence for second-degree murder is life in prison, with the possibility of parole after ten years. For a minor, the maximum penalty for such an offense is seven years' imprisonment, of which a maximum of four years can be spent in detention.
