The journey of Juan Pablo Varillas (ATP: 100) at the 2022 Lima Open ended this Friday, with the defeat 2-0 against Argentine Thiago Tirante (ATP: 197). Despite starting with favoritism, the national tennis player says goodbye in the quarterfinals, being beaten with partials of 6-4 and 6-3.

The duel was uphill for 'Juanpi' from the beginning, since he was unable to take advantage of the serve and allowed his opponent to gain an advantage (partially 2-0). However, our first racket reacted and leveled the match (2-2), but lost serve again and could not recover (6-4).

Circumstances were adverse for Varillas, who had to win the second set to provoke a third tie-break game. However, Juan Pablo, who had the support of the fans in the stands, was unable to reverse the story and was broken again when he started serving.

From now on, the representative of Peru did not make mistakes, although he could not change history and was down on the scoreboard by 5-3. During the decisive point, despite having the serve, the Peruvian tennis player could not recover and, after saving a match point, ended up falling 6-3, consummating his elimination.

In this way, Thiago Tirante enters the semifinals of the Lima Open 2022, an instance in which he will collide with another athlete from the 'Blanquirroja': he will measure forces with Gonzalo Bueno (ATP: 937). The 18-year-old national athlete has been one of the great surprises of the event and arrives with the highest motivation, after coming back and beating Portuguese Gastao Elias (ATP: 199) 2-1 in the quarterfinals.
