Johnny Depp: new controversy for the Pirates of the Caribbean star and his film Modi

Johnny Depp is always in controversy. Even though a lot of water has flowed under the bridge since the Amber Heard affair, the American actor was caught up in a controversy surrounding Jeanne du Barry, in 2023, in which he played the lead role. But this year, it is for his film Modi, which he directed, that Johnny Depp has to deal with new problems that he could probably have done without.

yet another controversy for Johnny Depp

Remember. Last year, at a press conference for the film Jeanne du Barry, Johnny Depp allowed himself to arrive half an hour after the start of the festivities, unheard of” commented Paris Match, while Maïwenn and her colleagues were, for their part, right on time. And even if Depp's performance as Louis XV was widely praised by critics, this behavior left a bitter taste in the mouth.

Clearly, Johnny Depp has decided to chain the controversies. This Tuesday, September 24, at the San Sebastián Festival, in Spain, a round table was to be held between the Modi team and a dozen journalists. But as Variety explains, ultimately nothing came of it.And for good reason, while twelve international journalists were to meet Johnny Depp for his second appearance behind the camera, only 30 minutes were planned to allow critics of the 7th art to talk with Depp, but also Riccardo Scamarcio or Antonia Desplat.

A period of time considered insufficient by the journalists who decided to boycott the event and, more generally, the film, considering that these working conditions were inappropriate. Journalists who left empty-handed, all deciding not to write a single line about the film.An insufficient “give and take” which gives rise to yet another controversy for Johnny Depp, who has been making unfortunate headlines for several years now.

But if journalists decide to shun Modi, it is above all in the face of the democratization of a controversial practice. LPress officers now prefer these quick and commercial interviews to long but constructive round tables, while influencers and content creators are now preferred to journalists. A race for money and positive and controlled communication which therefore pushed journalists to boycott the event. Before making their decision, critics of the 7th art still asked to speak privately with Johnny Depp, a request which was refused.

A situation that does not seem to be improving after the pitfalls encountered at the Venice Film Festival, where international journalists on site had already denounced not being able to interview the festival's headliners like Brad Pitt or Angelina Jolie.
