Joe Biden on Nasrallah's Elimination: This Is Justice Being Done

US President Joe Biden called the assassination of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah “justice done.”

“Hassan Nasrallah and the terrorist group Hezbollah led were responsible for the murder of hundreds of Americans over four decades of terror,”— the head of the White House said,  Voice of America .  —His death from an Israeli airstrike is justice done in memory of all his many victims, including thousands of American, Israeli and Lebanese civilians.”

Biden noted that the day after Hamas militants attacked Israel on October 7, 2023, “Nasrallah made the fateful decision to join forces with Hamas and open what he called a 'northern front' against Israel.”

In his statement, the US President reiterated Washington's support for Israel's right to defend itself against Hezbollah, Hamas, the Houthis and other Iranian-backed groups. At the same time, he stressed that the US is committed to achieving de-escalation of the conflicts in both the Gaza Strip and Lebanon through diplomacy.

"In Lebanon, we are negotiating an agreement that will allow people to safely return to their homes in Israel and southern Lebanon," the president concluded, stressing that "the time has come to implement these agreements, eliminate threats to Israel and ensure greater stability in the entire Middle East region."On Saturday, September 28, the IDF announced the elimination of the leader of Hezbollah, information that was later confirmed by the group itself. Israel also significantly increased airstrikes in Lebanon, killing several senior Hezbollah commanders and hundreds of others across large swathes of the country.

On Saturday, Hezbollah intensified rocket fire into Israel, forcing residents to flee for cover. Israeli missile defenses blocked most of the rockets, and there were no reports of casualties.

The escalation has raised fears that the conflict could spiral out of control, primarily due to the potential involvement of Iran, Hezbollah's main backer. Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said Israel is not waging war on the Lebanese people, calling Nasrallah a “murderer of thousands of Israelis and foreign citizens.”

The U.S. State Department on Saturday ordered the families of American diplomats to be evacuated from Beirut due to the “unstable and unpredictable situation” in the Lebanese capital. Joe Biden instructed the Pentagon to assess and, if necessary, “adjust the position of American forces” in the region.
