Justin Timberlake issued a public apology to his ex-girlfriend Britney Spears and singer Janet Jackson on Friday saying he had failed them in the past. The singer-actor spoke on his Instagram account after being criticized on social media and major media for interviews he gave more than 20 years ago about his sex life with Spears when they were both at the height of their careers. The Timberlake event followed the airing of the documentary "Framing Britney Spears" about the rise and fall of the "Princess of Pop," which included how the media embarrassed her when their relationship ended in 2002.
The hashtag #FreeBritney has been trending in recent weeks, with celebrities like Paris Hilton, Miley Cyrus, Bette Midler and more expressing their support for Spears.
Timberlake has also been dogged for years over allegations that he did not take enough responsibility during the halftime show of the 2004 Super Bowl, when he mistakenly exposed Janet Jackson's chest on stage.
“I specifically want to apologize to Britney Spears and Janet Jackson individually p or that I care about and respect these women and I know I failed them , ” Timberlake, 40, wrote on Instagram.
The“ Sexy Back ”singer, now married to actress Jessica Biel, said he apologized for having talked about inappropriately or not having raised your voice when it would have been correct in the past. "I understand that I fell short at those times and many others and benefited from a system that condones misogyny and racism," he said .
Timberlake and Spears dated for about three years before separating in 2002. The media questioned Spears about her virginity while Timberlake said he had slept with her and then wrote the song "Cry me a river" in which he hinted that the singer had been unfaithful to him.
In Friday's apology, Timberlake said the entertainment industry is preparing to white men for success. “Due to my ignorance, I did not recognize it for what it was as it was happening in my own life, ” he stated.
“I know that this apology is a first step and does not absolve me of the past. I want to take responsibility for my own mistakes in all of this, ”Timberlake wrote. “I care deeply about the well-being of the people I love and have loved. I can improve and I will improve. ”
Jessica Biel's response
In the publication in which Timberlake apologized publicly, his current wife and mother of his two children made her support explicit. "I love you ," wrote actress Jessica Biel in the comments, and accompanied her phrase with an emoticon of a heart.
Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake got married in 2012. The couple have two children together, Silas, five years old, and Phineas who was born last year. A year and a half ago the singer was photographed affectionately with actress Alisha Wainwright , a castmate of the movie “Palmer, during a night in New Orleans. He attributed these images to excessive alcohol and "an error in judgment." His wife forgave him
Britney Spears' father must share legal guardianship of the singer
Los Angeles Superior Court on Thursday rejected a petition from Britney Spears father Jamie, who wanted to fully control the legal guardianship of the singer, which will continue to be shared with an investment fund of her choosing
Spears' lawyers want Jamie Spears to stop controlling all aspects of her daughter's public life
March 17 and April 27 will be the next hearings.
Although Jamie will continue as legal guardian, he must continue to share all his decisions with the private fund Bessemer Trust, including those regarding finances, an end to which the father's attorneys opposed and which was rejected by Judge Brenda Penny.
This decision is closer to the will of Spears, who expressed her "strong opposition" to her father continuing to exercise total control over her life. " It's no secret that my client doesn't want her father as a co-guardian," said the singer's attorney, Samuel Ingham.
Spears, now 39, agreed to have her father become her legal guardian in 2008, a period marked by erratic behavior in which she was admitted to a psychiatric hospital and lost custody of her children. Later, the artist was rehabilitated, released new albums and starred in one of the most watched shows in Las Vegas, but the guardianship was never revoked.
The "Toxic" singer has said that " she will not act again" until her father abandons that legal figure. Spears has not acted, recorded music, or appeared in front of the press since declaring a career hiatus in early 2019.
On her Twitter and Instagram accounts she posted a video of a three-year-old performance on Tuesday with the caption: “ I will always love being on stage … But I am taking the time to learn and be a normal person … I love to enjoy the basics of daily life! !! ”
