Japan is modernizing Type 10 tanks with active protection systems and 30 mm guns

Japan continues efforts to upgrade Type 10 tanks to counter new threats on the battlefield, including anti-tank weapons and unmanned aerial vehicles complexes (UAVs). Japan's Ministry of Defense recently published a procurement document detailing these upgrades, which include the installation of an Active Protection System (APS) and 30mm gun on the vehicles.

The Type 10 Tank Modernization Program, announced on June 28, 2024, aims to strengthen the tank's defenses against current threats such as guided munitions and drones, including FPV drones and ammunition drop systems. The technical goals of this update include improved protection against anti-tank weapons and drones, which are increasingly common in today's combat scenarios.

According to information provided by the Defense Acquisition, Technology and Logistics Agency (ATLA), three active defense systems were selected for evaluation:

• Rafael’s Trophy;
• Rheinmetall’ s Strike Shield;
• Elbit’s Iron Fist.

These systems were selected based on specific criteria, including protection against top-of-the-tank threats, 360&deg interception capabilities; and the total weight is less than 1000 kg.

In parallel, the ministry also decided to conduct tests of the Kongsberg RS6 remote module equipped with a 30 mm cannon. This module is expected to be integrated into the active defense system and have sensors capable of detecting high-speed objects, including drones. The aim is to increase the ability of the Type 10 tanks to counter air threats while providing effective protection against ground threats.

Although the exact number of tanks to be upgraded has not yet been disclosed, Japan plans to purchase approximately 300 RS6 modules , which will be produced domestically at a rate of 10 units per year. In addition, Japan continues to produce new Type 10 tanks, and in 2025 there are plans to order 12 more machines to increase the total number to 148 units. Ultimately, around 300 tanks of the type are expected to be built.

The Ministry of Defense is also considering the development of additional protection modules that could be installed on the Type 10 tanks. Designed with modularity in mind, these vehicles can install new systems directly from the factory, facilitating the integration of advanced technologies.
