Israel has struck two residential buildings and a UN school in the Gaza Strip housing displaced Palestinian families. Hamas-controlled local officials said the attack killed at least 34 people, including 19 women and children.

The attack took place on Wednesday afternoon, September 11, at the UN preparatory school for boys, Al-Jauni, in the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza. The Israeli military said the attack targeted Hamas militants inside the school.

Among the dead were six employees of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), which runs the school, Voice of America reports.

"This is the highest death toll of our personnel in a single incident," the agency said on X's social media account. "Schools and other civilian infrastructure must be protected at all times and must not be targeted."

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the shelling of the UN school. In a message posted on X's social media account, he wrote: ""What is happening in Gaza is completely unacceptable… These serious violations of international humanitarian law must stop immediately."

"The longer impunity prevails, the more international humanitarian law and the Geneva Conventions will lose their relevance", – said in turn the head of UNRWA Philippe Lazzarini on the social network H.

Another strike on Wednesday, September 11, hit a house in the Khan Younis area of the southern Gaza Strip, killing 11 people, including six brothers and sisters.

BAGNET recalls that at least 220 UNRWA employees have been killed since October 7, 2023, when Hamas militants attacked Israel, which in response launched a large-scale military campaign in Gaza.

Tens of thousands of Palestinians forced to leave their homes as a result of military action and evacuation orders live in schools in Gaza. During the war, the Al-Jauni school has been hit several times.
