Tel Aviv – In the face of rising corona infections, Israel began on Monday to give patients with a weakened immune system a third vaccination as a booster. According to the Ministry of Health, anyone who has had a heart, lung or kidney transplant, as well as some cancer patients, are eligible for a quick third vaccination with the vaccine from Biontech / Pfizer.
It is becoming increasingly clear that patients with a weakened immune system “do not develop enough antibodies after two doses of the vaccine,” said the ministry. According to its own information, the Sheba Medical Center in Tel Aviv administered the third corona vaccination dose to several heart transplant patients on Monday.
With one of the fastest vaccination campaigns in the world, Israel initially succeeded in massively reducing the number of new infections. Although the majority of adults have now been immunized with the vaccine from the German company Biontech and its US partner Pfizer, the number of cases is increasing again.
Part of the responsibility for this is the spread of the highly contagious delta variant of the coronavirus. Experts see signs that the Biontech / Pfizer vaccine is slightly less effective against the variant first discovered in India. They consider a slight decrease in vaccination protection with a mild course to be “likely”.
