The rifle differs from the previous version of the Masaf and is designed for a powerful 7.62×51 mm cartridge. Despite the AR15 platform, experts noticed the shortcomings of the Iranian sample.
Iranian gunsmiths at the DSA exhibition in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, presented a model of the domestic Masaf assault rifle chambered for 7.62×51 mm, reports the publication Defensa.
Observers write that the rifle, which is already in serial production for the Iranian armed forces, demonstrates an interesting combination of modern technologies and time-tested design solutions of the past. Masaf is based on the AR10 platform, the predecessor of the AR15 and the American M16. It is noted that despite the original design of the 1950s, the rifle was adapted to Iranian production needs and capabilities.
The weapon is designed for powerful 7.62×51 mm cartridges, unlike the previous Masaf sample for 5.56×45 mm, and has a number of features. The compact design features a 20-inch barrel and a slide-out stock that allows the stock to be adjusted for the shooter's convenience.
The main parts of the frame are made of aircraft-grade aluminum, although the photo shows details that indicate a not-so-good exterior finish .

The design of the grip has been optimized compared to previous versions, improving both the size. The barrel has a simple design with three elements to reduce muzzle flash, and the 20-round magazine is made of polymer, similar to the popular US PMAG magazines.
The top of the rifle has a guide bar that allows the installation of optical sights. In addition, with optics, the rifle can be used as a weapon for infantry shooters — Marksman (Designated Marksman Rifle).
Mechanical aiming elements are modeled after the G3, another rifle known for its reliability. However, Masaf has a number of problems. Observers noted that the decoration of the mechanisms is not at such a high level as in similar machines presented on the international market.
Finally, experts added that the Masaf demonstrates Iran's desire to modernize military equipment, adapting and improving old concepts taking into account modern technologies and design.
