This truck that you are walking in the photo looks quite unusual. It does not, and never has, had a cab, and in 63 years it has not traveled 25,000 kilometers, but it has carried hundreds of thousands of gallons of fuel. Yes, and on public roads, he did not appear.

This is a 1959 Dodge D300 and the truck usually looked like in the second photo, but the hero of today's story is a specialized vehicle – a tanker. He spent his whole life at one of the Texas airfields, refueling small planes.

I did not manage to find out the volume of the barrel, but the chassis of the truck on which the tanker is built is designed for a ton of payload. The absence of a cabin reduced the weight, thereby allowing the placement of technological equipment without encroaching on the main load capacity.

Usually Dodge D300 was equipped with eight-cylinder V-engines, but this one was an exception. Under the hood, there is a 3.8-liter in-line flat-six with a capacity of 120 hp. Everything is quite logical, why does he need a powerful engine, if the truck did not go further than the airfield and overload is impossible here even in theory.

After years of inactivity the engine started up relatively easily, it took only the replacement of several tubes, a cooling pipe and a drive belt. Even the old spark plug wires still perform their function properly. Fiction. Otherwise, the machine is also complete, the transfer pump also works.

There are already a lot of tankers decommissioned years ago and just stood until recently in the backyard of the airfield. I know that in the USA there are collectors of everything related to fuel, from canisters to entire fuel trucks, so some of them will be lucky to replenish their collection with a very rare and curious exhibit.
