Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary 2024 – what not to do on Intercession

>> Prohibitions on the 2024 Intercession holiday

On October 1, we celebrate a great holiday – the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos. As with any holiday, there are certain prohibitions on Pokrovy that must be taken into account. Find out what you cannot do on this day!

We have prepared for you a list of things that are prohibited on the feast of the Intercession of the Holy Mother of God. We will also recall the traditions of celebrating this holiday, which our ancestors cherished.

What not to do on Pokrov

  • On Pokrovy, as on any religious holiday, you should not do housework: clean, wash, sew and embroider. Also, you can't engage in repair work, but harvest and prepare goodies – please. By the way, this holiday does not include food restrictions, so you can cook and taste absolutely everything, but it is better to refrain from drinking alcohol.
  • It is forbidden to slander on this day.. Any thoughts are material, and bad words can be spoken at an ominous time – remember this too.
  • On October 1, you absolutely cannot refuse matchmakers. According to the omen, the girl who refused the suitors on Pokrov is doomed to be a virgin for another three years.
  • It is also not worth borrowing money on this day, because with it you can give away your happiness.

Intercession – a Cossack holiday

What can be done on the Intercession holiday

On this bright day, all Christians turn to the Holy Mother of God with a prayer, asking her for salvation and intercession. There has been a belief for a long time: during the whole year, the Holy Mother of God will protect from evil and calamities exactly the person who sincerely prayed to her on this day. This year it is especially relevant, when everyone has a relative, friend or acquaintance who defends our country!

An important tradition of this day was visiting the church. Families went to church, dressed for the occasion. Unmarried girls who wanted to get married came to the church earlier to put a candle near the icon of the Holy Mother of God and pray for their sincere wish to come true.

After the service, families returned home and baked pancakes. With a tray of ruddy pancakes, the hostess went around the corners of the house to appease the householder. On this day, it is also important to show mercy to people who need help. Good deeds on this bright holiday are very important!
