Indonesian volcano erupts for second time in a week

In Indonesia on Thursday, November 7, an eruption of the Lewotobi Laki-Laki volcano was recorded again – a column of smoke rose to a height of 2,500 meters from its summit. AP writes about this.

It is noted that there was no immediate report of casualties from the latest eruption.

A 1,584-metre (5,100 ft) volcano on the remote Indonesian island of Flores spewed clouds of grey, hot ash on Thursday. A mixture of rock, lava and gas was ejected up to 1 kilometre (0.62 miles) from the crater, the Indonesian Volcanology and Disaster Mitigation Centre said in a statement.

“The volcano’s activity has paused since Monday’s deadly eruption that killed nine people and injured 64 others,” the Associated Press reported. “More than 10,000 people in 10 villages were affected by Monday’s eruption. About 4,400 people were moved to temporary shelters after the eruption, which destroyed seven schools, nearly two dozen homes and a monastery.”

The country's volcano monitoring agency has raised the alert status of Lewotobi Laki Laki to its highest level and more than doubled the exclusion zone to a 7-kilometer radius, banning all activity in the area.

Authorities have warned thousands of people who have left not to return home as the government plans to relocate about 16,000 residents from the danger zone.

“Permanent relocation is seen as a long-term mitigation measure to prevent a future eruption,” the head of the National Disaster Management Agency said.

BAGNET previously reported that Indonesia is set to evacuate at least 16,000 people after the eruption of Lewotobi Laki Laki. Residents of villages around the Levotobi Laki-Laki volcano, whose eruption has left people dead and injured, as well as thousands of damaged homes, will be evacuated.
