Developed by Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) as part of the Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India) initiative, the Akashteer project aimed at improving air defense operations by seamlessly integrating radar and communications systems at all levels into a single network
The Akashteer system is designed to enable the Army to control the airspace at low altitudes over combat zones and effectively manage ground air defense systems.
This system comes almost a year after the Ministry of Defense signed a €219,464,878 contract with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) to enhance the air defense capabilities of the Indian Army with this new system.
Given that the Indian Army has declared 2024 as the “Year of Technology Mastery”, various initiatives are being implemented to integrate niche technologies and systems into its arsenal. The introduction of Akashteer Command Centers is a major milestone in the Army's transformation to meet both the current and future needs of complex air defense operations.
Akashteer aims to revolutionize air defense operations by seamlessly integrating radar and communications systems at all levels in a single network. This integration provides unprecedented situational awareness and control, enabling rapid engagement of enemy targets, reducing the risk of friendly fire incidents and ensuring the safety of friendly aircraft in contested airspace.
A key feature of the Akashteer is its emphasis on mobility and resilience. The system control centers are designed to be vehicle-based and mobile, ensuring operational capabilities are maintained even in complex communications environments.
Overall, the Akashteer system is poised to achieve full automation of air defense operations, significantly enhancing posture and readiness air defense of India.
