India sent to Armenia the first battery of the Akash anti-aircraft missile system, which is designed to destroy aerodynamic targets at a range of 25-30 km.
This became known thanks to reports from Bharat Electronics, which manufactures this air defense system, and a statement by the Minister of Defense of Rajnath Singh's country. The recipient has not been officially announced, but considering that Armenia has become the first and so far the only known export customer of Akash, there are no other options.
The contract for the supply of the Akash air defense system was signed at the end of 2022 and provides for the supply of 15 batteries, which is equal to the fire unit and the Soviet concept of the air defense system. The value of the deal was 720 million dollars, that is, 48 million dollars for one complex. And from contact to receiving the first air defense system, two years actually passed.
In general, one Akash battery consists of four launchers, each of which has three missiles, one Rajendra radar with a passive phased array antenna, a command post and support vehicles. The complex can be installed on the T-72 chassis, BMP-2, on a wheeled cargo platform, which Armenia apparently chose.

For this, a radio command control system is used on the first part of the trajectory, and when approaching the target – semi-active radar at the expense of GSN in the anti-aircraft missile itself. The number of targets that can be fired at the same time – 4.
The anti-aircraft missile is very similar to the Soviet 3M9 from the “Kub” complex, using a solid propellant booster and a solid propellant rocket engine. The mass of the warhead of the missile – 55 kg. And in general, the characteristics of the Indian anti-aircraft missile with a range of up to 25 km are generally similar to the 3M9, but the Indian one is heavier 720 kg against 599 kg, wider by 2 cm, 35 cm against 33 cm, and has a similar length of 5.8 meters.
There is also a version of Akash-1S with an extended range of up to 30 km, the weight of the warhead is 60 kg, and most importantly – with an active homing head. And currently, India is testing the new Akash-NG missile, which began to be developed in 2016. It already has a two-pulse solid fuel engine, an updated active radar radar and an extended range of 50-60 or 70-80 km according to various sources. At the same time, Armenia could at best order only Akash-1 and upgraded Akash-1S missiles in 2022.
Akash-1 missiles And although currently Indian weapons look like an exotic choice, but in the conditions of a shortage of weapons, even in France they are looking at Pinaka MLRS from India.
