В Ukraine is developing an updated APC

Developers received a specific technical task from state structures, so the project, which was frozen in 2018-2019, was restored and improved.< /p>

Ukrainian manufacturer NVO “Praktika” is developing a deeply modified version of the “Otaman” wheeled armored personnel carrier. This is reported by “Military”.

The representative of the manufacturer, Serhiy Vilkov, stated that “Otaman” was actively developed in 2018-2019, but it was suspended due to technical reasons. Now the project has been unfrozen and work is underway on an essentially updated version. It should take into account the mistakes and experience of the first version, as well as the new requirements of state structures.

It is noted that the “Otaman” will receive a changed silhouette of the hull, which is connected with the internal rearrangement of internal nodes. Now the engine-transmission compartment will occupy almost the entire front part of the interior volume of the car, and not only the right part from the driver, as it was in the base. The driver-mechanic will be moved behind the compartment, which should improve both ergonomics and safety of the crew. The layout of the Ukrainian “Otaman” will be similar to the German Boxer.

“The machine in the old version was made without a detailed technical task. The problem was that it was rather certain outlines of what it should be, without detailed requirements for individual systems. For example, in relation to the reservation, it was stated that the machine should carry a hinged ceramic protection, however, no specific protection requirements have been identified,” — says Vilkov.

Now, as the representative of “Praktika” says, they have a clear technical task that allows them to develop a specific machine. The machine is required to have a protection level of class 5 according to the STANAG 4569 standard, which provides protection against 25-mm subcaliber ammunition at a distance of 500 meters. The company believes that the optimal solution for a wheeled armored personnel carrier would be to provide circular protection according to class 2 with the possibility of adding mounted ceramic armor with an increase to class 4.

That is, “Praktika” offers protection against armor-piercing bullets of caliber 7.62×39 mm at a distance of 30 meters with the possibility of upgrading to protection against 14.5×114 mm ammunition at a distance of 200 meters. In addition, “Otaman” will have a V-shaped bottom, which should improve protection against mine explosions.

Work is currently underway on two versions of the armored personnel carrier: a six-wheeled and an eight-wheeled one. A high level of uniformity is expected, including the same engines and transmissions. Due to the increase in protection, the “Otaman” will become heavier and its weight will reach 30-32 tons instead of 26, as it was in the first version.
