In the US, a judge wore VR glasses to visit the “crime scene” and see the events through the eyes of the accused

In Florida, a judge for the first time in history put on virtual reality glasses to enter a crime scene simulation.

This was reported by Newsweek on January 3.

The court hearing, which took place on December 17, 2024, considered the case of one of the local residents of Southwest Ranches, Florida.

Miguel Albis was charged in aggravated assault with a weapon that could cause fatal consequences. The incident occurred at a wedding, when the owner of the restaurant (he also Miguel Albis), where the celebration was taking place, used a weapon.

According to him, in this way he tried to calm the «robust» drunk guests, and acted in self-defense.

Defendant's attorney Ken Padowitz hired an artist who was able to recreate the events of that day in computer animation.

Using Oculus Quest 2 virtual reality headsets, Judge Andrew Siegel and the prosecution and defense were able to see the scene crime», and how everything happened with his own eyes.

The next hearing will be held in February.

The defendant's lawyer said that this could be the first case in the United States when virtual reality technology (VR) will be used during a criminal hearing.
