In the vastness of the Antofagasta desert, the Chilean army conducted a technical and tactical evaluation training of Leopard 2A4 tank crews. The key event of these exercises was a tank duel in which two crews faced each other using the Saab BT 46 laser simulation system.
The main objective of the exercise was to assess the level of training and education achieved in 2024 through a series of challenging tests where the real firepower of the Leopard 2A4 is combined with the skill of its operators.
The Leopard 2A4, the main battle tank developed by the German company Krauss-Maffei Wegmann as the successor to the Leopard 1, has proven itself as a versatile model thanks to its unique combination of firepower, mobility and protection since its introduction in 1979. It is equipped with a 120 mm smoothbore gun developed by Rheinmetall, capable of engaging mobile targets at a distance of up to 5,000 meters with APFSDS-T and HEAT-MP-T ammunition. The tank is also equipped with a digital fire control system, a paired 7.62 mm machine gun and smoke grenade launchers to cover its movement. Thanks to the MTU MB 873 diesel engine, the Leopard 2A4 can reach a maximum speed of 72 km/h, navigate difficult terrain and overcome significant obstacles.

Felipe Azocar, the exercise coordinator, the tactical evaluation was primarily intended to test the application and mastery of procedures acquired by soldiers in the Ground Forces. The crews' skills were tested in a variety of scenarios, including night simulations, tank endurance tests, track deployment and disassembly exercises, precision driving, advanced logistics, tank and small arms fire, on-board navigation, first aid and challenging night marches .
As part of the exercise, two tank crews engaged in a duel using the Saab BT 46 laser simulation system, which simulated a tank-to-tank battle. This technology provides a unique training approach that allows crews to test their ability to "neutralize" the enemy in simulated combat conditions.
The training was marked by the best crews, including the No. 9 Vencedores Armored Group of the 1st Cuirassier Armored Brigade, recognized for their excellence and level of training. Lt. Francisco Fernandez, commander of the winning crew, noted that this assessment enhanced his unit's operational experience.
Beyond its immediate tactical purpose, this exercise underscores the critical importance of rigorous, well-rounded training that combines physical readiness, technical skills and mental toughness. With training of this magnitude, the Chilean Army ensures that its Leopard 2A4 crews are ready to effectively and professionally face future military challenges, strengthening its position among the elite defense units.
