In Switzerland, a suicide capsule was used for the first time. Several people were detained

In Switzerland a 64-year-old American woman used the Sarco suicide capsule for the first time. The local police have already opened a case for aiding and abetting suicide, several people have been detained.

This is reported by The Guardian.

The suicide capsule was used on September 23 in a forest in the municipality of Maryshausen in the canton of Schaffhausen, which is not far from the border with Germany. On the same day, in the evening, police officers, forensic medical experts and prosecutors arrived at the scene. The capsule was removed, and the deceased woman was taken to the Zurich Institute of Forensic Medicine for an autopsy.

In Switzerland, assisted suicide is allowed on the condition that outsiders do not participate in the process. At the same time, euthanasia is prohibited — intentionally taking the life of a sick person.

In the Sarco hermetic capsule, death occurs after the person inside presses a button and releases nitrogen. After that, the oxygen level decreases, which    does not cause suffering to a person.

The suicide machine was developed by 77-year-old Australian doctor and physicist Philip Nitschke, who currently lives in the Netherlands. It is also known that the doctor himself tested the capsule using an oxygen mask. According to Nichke, the woman's death was “light and painless”. He watched the woman's death via video link and monitored her pulse and blood oxygen levels. Two minutes after pressing the button, she passed out, and three minutes later she died.

«We saw small muscle twitches in her arms, but at that time, she must have , was already unconscious. It looked as we expected», — he said.

Before her death, the American woman said that she had wanted to die for two years. She was diagnosed with a serious illness accompanied by severe pain. She said that her two sons will fully support her decision. She was examined by a psychiatrist and decided that the woman is mentally healthy.

Swiss police detained four people in this case. The identities of those arrested are unknown.
